Born in 1958 in Dijon. Studied with his father Marcel CAENS , Robert PICHAUREAU , Pierre POLLIN and Maurice ANDRE at the CNSM de PARIS . Solo trumpet with the Orchestre de Lyon (1977-1981) and solo cornet with the Opéra de Paris (1981-1985). After leading the Concert Arban until 1989, he founded the "CUIVRES FRANÇAIS" and played in a trio with André CAZALET, horn and Michel BECQUET, trombone. From 1985 to 2024, he taught trumpet at the CRR in Dijon, and from 2003 to 2021 at the CNSM in Lyon.
He gives master classes at most international schools (London Royal Academy , Guildhall , Manchester RNCM , Québec (Domaine Forget) , Genève - Lausanne (Hemu) , Fribourg , Istanbul (Devlet) , Baltimore (Peabody) , Annapolis , Barcelone , Rotterdam (CodArts) , San Sebastian(Musikene) , Munich (Richard Strauss) , Oslo (Norvegian Academy) , Alzira (Spanish Brass festival) , Isla-Verde (Argentinian Bronces) , Courtrai ( Belgium Brass festival)..., Epsival ( Epsilon festival) , Chile ( San Javier Vivre Ensemble) , Gran Canaria (Maspalomas trumpet festival) , Riga (Brass Festival) ...
He plays for the cinema (soundtrack of the film Cyrano de BERGERAC with J.C. PETIT) but also M. LEGRAND , V. COSMA , G. DELERUE , L. SCHIFRIN, G.GARVARENTZ, JM.SENIA , M. He has met many artists from diverse backgrounds: J.J. MOSALINI, G. BEYTELMANN, B. FONTAINE, G. OPPITZ, N.FREIRE , J.GUILLOU ,L.WILSON , R.AUBRY, H. AGNEL , M.CONSTANT. Y.XENAKIS, FR.DUCHABLE, A BOUCOURECHLIEV , M.GARAY ... He is a member of SACEM, arranger and composer, and has published several hundred titles with Editions Marc Reift. He has created numerous festivals: Musique au Chambertin 1987 , Les Cuivres vont à Dijon/Académie Internationale de Musique de Dijon 1982 , St Vincent Tournante de Fixin 1994 and Gevrey-Chambertin 2020 , Music'Halles 2012 , TC31 , Marathon Rameau ( with notably the Rameau Flashmob bringing together several hundred singers and instrumentalists ) ...
He founded the "Cuivres en France" association and the Gazette des Cuivres in 1988 with Yves Remy... In 1987 he created a regional orchestra, the Camerata de Bourgogne 1987, which became the Orchestre Dijon-Bourgogne in 2010. In 2012, he developed an educational program in Dijon's disadvantaged neighborhoods, "le cornet a la frite", which was noticed by Francois Hollande. With Bernard Thomas, he leads musical cruises on Club Med 1 and 2. Creation of the Vivartis Partothèque, for students.
He created the Parades Cuivrées, popular events bringing together dozens of brass players to parade in major capitals. The one accompanying the exhibition of "Pleurants" from Dijon's Musée des Beaux Arts, at the Metropolitan Museum in New York in March 2010, brought together more than 100 American brass instruments. Other events will take place in Lyon ( CIMCL) , Semur en Auxois ( Fête de la Bague) , Montigny les Arsures ( La Percée du vin jaune ) , St Vincent tournantes ( Fixin 1994 -Gevrey 2020 ) , Dijon ( Observatoire de la Laïcité - Printemps de l'Europe - Marathon Rameau - IUP Denis Dideriot - Jours de fête - TC31 ), Paris Gare de Lyon ... Since 1997, he has contributed to the development of B&S trumpets (Germany) for the BUFFET CRAMPON group, of which he is the international artist.
In April 2006, he released the CD "3 ème Souffle" recorded with the Orchestre National de Lyon (dir. Michel PLASSON), featuring 4 works written for him by W.SHELLER, R. GALLIANO , P. CARATINI and M.COLOMBIER. He was president of the jury of the 2011 ARD International Competition in Munich. In July 2011, he was promoted to "Chevalier des Arts et Lettres" by the French Minister of Culture, and in September 2013 to "Cultural Ambassador for the City of Dijon, in association with the Cité de la Gastronomie et des Vins". In January 2022, he was invited by Radio-France for the Paris premiere of "Icosium", written for him by Martial SOLAL. Double concerto for trumpet, piano and orchestra , with Manuel ROCHEMAN and the Orchestre National de France dir. Cristian MACELARU .
To date, he has published over 30 CDs, and in 2023 will release "CYRANO et les BO du Cinéma Français" (JC.Petit, M.Legrand, G.Delerue, V.Cosma, F.Talgorn , B.Fontaine, R.Wagner ...) recorded with the Orchestre National Avignon-Provence dir.J.Claude Petit et J.Pillement . (Indesens label) In 2024, he will sign a book dedicated to his master Maurice André, published by Paolo Zecchini.
